Special Programs August 2008

The Seniors Program, held at the Community Activity Center, located at One Normal Plaza, has many varied programs for everyone in the McLean County area that are 60 years of age or older. Seniors are welcome every weekday between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.

SENIORS PROGRAM SHUTTLE BUS SERVICE

The Normal Township Seniors Program shuttle bus service is available to seniors 60 years of age or older in Normal Township. The shuttle bus service offers door to door transportation to and from the Community Activity Center. The shuttle bus operates Monday through Friday according to the Seniors Program calendar year. Pickup time begins at 9:00 am and runs until approximately 10:00 am. The return trips take place at 1:00 pm and 3:00 pm The cost for riding the bus is $1.00 each way. In order to run an efficient shuttle bus service, all riders will need to reserve a seat on the shuttle bus by Noon one day in advance.

NPL BOOK DISCUSSION GROUP: FRIDAY, AUGUST 1ST, 10:15 - NOON

The NPL book discussion group chooses paperback books to read and purchase, and then discusses them on the first Friday of each month. The discussion group is lead by Kay Wilson. This month's meeting will take place on Friday, August 1st, from 10:15 - Noon. The group uses books that are available at the Normal Public Library. MOVIE: FRIDAY, AUGUST 1ST & FRIDAY, AUGUST 22ND, 12:30 PM

On Friday, August 1st & Friday, August 22nd at 12:30 pm a movie will be shown on our BIG SCREEN TV. Refreshments will be served. In the event that a title is not available on its screening day, every effort will be made to find a suitable replacement.

On Friday, August 1st: Movie: Grace is Gone - Upon hearing his wife was killed in the Iraq war, a father takes his two daughters on a road trip.

On Friday, August 22nd: Movie: Rails & Ties - A deadly collision between a train and car lead to an unlikely bond between the train engineer and a young boy who escapes the carnage.

NORIKO COLEY: WATERCOLOR CLASS: MONDAYS, AUGUST 4TH, 11TH, 18TH, & 25TH, 9:30 AM - 12:30 PM

Noriko Coley's watercolor class will meet from 9:30 - 12:30 pm on Monday, August 4th, 11th, 18th, and 25th. The cost of the class is $64.00. To register, contact the Seniors Program at 888-9099. There is a maximum of 15 students. Payment is due by Friday, August 1st.

INTERNET COMPUTER CLASS: MONDAYS, AUGUST 4TH, 11TH, 18TH, & 25TH, 9:30 - 11:30 AM

Kay Wilson will teach a computer class on the use of the Internet. The class will meet on Mondays for three consecutive weeks starting on August 4th. A class intended for questions and answers will be held on August 25th. The class meets from 9:30-11:30 am. The cost of the class is $15.00. Registration for all computer classes is on a first come first serve basis. Registration will begin at 9:00 am on Monday, July 28th at the Community Activity Center, One Normal Plaza, 1110 Douglas St. in Normal. Payment is expected upon registration.

ROUTE 66 RED HAT SOCIETY ANNUAL PICNIC: WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 6TH, 10:30 AM

The Route 66 Red Hatters of Normal is scheduled to meet for their annual July picnic on Wednesday, August 6th at 10:30 am at the Community Activity Center. Following the meeting the group will meet at the Ozark House for lunch. Don't forget to wear your red hat and purple outfit! GREAT BOOKS: THURSDAY, AUGUST 7TH, 10:00 AM - NOON

Great Books reading and discussion programs introduce adult participants to significant works of literature. Academy of Seniors Great Books is scheduled to meet on Thursday, August 7th from 10:00 am - Noon. For more information contact Jay Edmondson at 309-747-2883.

SENIOR HOME FORECLOSURE: MARY WILLIAMS: FRIDAY, AUGUST 8TH, 11:00 AM

Join Mary Williams, member of Central Illinois Organization Project, on Friday, August 8th at 11:00 am for a presentation on the foreclosure crisis. She will discuss how the foreclosure crisis is affecting senior citizens.

BUNCO: FRIDAY, AUGUST 8TH, 12:30 AM

Come and join us on Friday, August 8th at 12:30 pm for a fun dice game. Bunco is played in rounds. Players take turns rolling the dice trying to accumulate as many points as possible to win each round. The game is played at tables of four in competing teams of two. MELVIN LONG'S 100TH BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION BINGO: HEARTLAND HEALTHCARE: TUESDAY, AUGUST 12TH, 11:00 AM

Melody, from Heartland Healthcare, will host Melvin Long's 100th Birthday Celebration Bingo on Tuesday, August 12th at 11:00 am. Numerous prizes will be given to the lucky winners. Come and join Melody for this special hour of bingo.

PEPS APPRECIATION BRUNCH: WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 13TH, 10:30 AM

The Seniors Program will host an appreciation brunch for the members of this class on Wednesday, August 13th at 10:30 am.

TEXAS HOLD'EM POKER TOURNAMENT: FRIDAY, AUGUST 15TH, 12:30 PM

Terry Fry will host a Texas Hold'em Poker tournament on Friday, August 15th at 12:30 pm. Experienced, as well as inexperienced players are encouraged to participate. There is no buy-in required. You will be playing with chips that will be provided. The winner of the tournament will receive a trophy.

BACK TO SCHOOL BINGO: ASTA CARE: TUESDAY, AUGUST 19TH, 11:00 AM

A representative from Asta Care will host Back to School Bingo on Tuesday, August 19th at 11:00 am. Numerous prizes will be given out to the lucky winners. Come and join Asta Care for this special hour of bingo.

WORD WEAVERS: TUESDAY, AUGUST 19TH, 1:00 PM

Word Weavers, a local group of area writers, will meet on Tuesday, August 19th at 1:00 pm. The group shares writing techniques and writing ideas. Come and share your ideas. For more information call 888-9099.

BROMENN: NUTRITION AND AGING: WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 20TH, 10:30 AM

As we age our bodies require different nutrients. On Wednesday, August 20th at 10:30 am join Illinois State University intern, Tori McRoberts, and Registered Dietitian, Angela Malinowski, for a discussion on age specific nutrition needs.

GENEALOGY: THURSDAY, AUGUST 21ST, 1:00 PM.

The monthly Genealogy group will meet on Thursday, August 21st at 1:00 pm. If you are interested in sharing new and old genealogy ideas, new software, and Internet sites, come join this group. For more information call 888-9099.

GARAGE SALE BINGO: TUESDAY, AUGUST 26TH, 11:00 AM

The Seniors Program will sponsor Garage Sale Bingo on Tuesday, August 26th at 11:00 am. Various garage sale items will be given as prizes.

SHIP (SENIOR HEALTH INSURANCE PROGRAM): TUESDAY, AUGUST 26TH, 1:00-3:00 PM.

The Seniors Program, sponsored by Normal Township, provides space for YWCA/RSVP Senior Health Insurance Program (SHIP) volunteers to individually and privately counsel and assist seniors with Medicare or Health Insurance questions on Tuesday, August 26th from 1:00-3:00 pm. The counselors providing assistance are trained through the State of Illinois.

PAINTERS WORKSHOP: WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 27TH, 9:00 AM - 3:00 PM

An all day painters' workshop is scheduled on Wednesday, August 27th from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. The purpose of the workshop is for experienced or inexperienced artists to come and paint and socialzie with others,

BUS TRIP: KIMMSWICK CRUISE AND LUNCH: KIMMSWICK, MO., THURSDAY, AUGUST 28TH, 5:45 AM - 8:15 PM

The Seniors Program is sponsoring a bus trip to Kimmswick, Missouri for lunch at the Blue Owl and a riverboat ride on Thursday, August 28th. You will need to arrive at the Community Activity Center at 5:45 am. The bus will leave at 6:00 am and return approximately 8:15 pm. The cost of this trip is $94.00 and includes transportation, lunch at the Blue Owl, riverboat ride, and drivers tip. This trip is currently full.

BRIDGE TOURNAMENT: FRIDAY, AUGUST 29TH, 12:30 PM

There will be a bridge tournament on Friday, August 29th at 12:30 pm. Prizes will be awarded for 1st, 2nd, & 3rd place winners. For more information, or to sign-up for the bridge tournament, call 888-9099. Sign up by: Wednesday, August 27th.

CARDS

Almost every afternoon Monday through Friday seniors are invited to play cards. You will find tables for bridge, pinochle, and euchre. Individuals wanting to play bridge and pinochle will need to call the Seniors Program at 888-9099 to have your name put on a list for a table. You will need to call one day in advance by 3:00 PM. to secure your spot for the following day. Bridge starts at 12:30 pm. and play continues until 3:00 pm. Pinochle table times are as follows: 10:00 am - 12:00 noon & 12:30 - 3:00 PM.

PEACE MEAL

The Community Activity Center is a Peace Meal site. Noontime meals are served Monday through Friday and are available for all persons 60 and over. Participants are served a delicious well-balanced meal containing at least 1/3 of the daily adult nutritional requirements. There is a suggested donation of $3.00 for the meal. We would like to encourage seniors to get out of their homes and enjoy a meal in the company of friends and neighbors. In order for the proper number of meals to be prepared and if needed, transportation scheduled, please make your reservation(s) by 12:00 noon one day in advance calling 888-9099. .

WHAT ARE OPEN CLASSES

If you see a class advertised as an OPEN class, it means the class is open to the public free of charge. The OPEN classes may also serve as an introduction for those interested in registering for an exercise class. In addition, the open classes held between sessions, also serve as make-up classes for participants and instructors.
